Expanding to the US: Why An Australian Tech Startup Chose Denver as its First Landing

For Australian startups, the idea of expanding from ‘down under’ to take on the world is always considered an aspiration. Outside of our passion for travel, we also have a passion to share our niche ideas and tech creations, particularly with those that are just as hospitable.

Queue Denver, a thriving startup economy comprising of 9.1% of total businesses, over 5k startup employees, and 8th in the US talent market. It’s also the 2nd best city to live in the United States (1st being Austin, Texas). If that doesn’t turn heads, then the Mayor of Denver, Michael B. Hancock, most certainly would. Last week, Enablo and Facebook had the pleasure of hosting Mayor Hancock at the Sydney Facebook office during his trip to Australia & New Zealand. Focussing on business retention, Foreign Direct Investment attraction and building partnerships, innovation and business groups, Daragh McGrath, CEO of Enablo, had the pleasure of meeting Mayor Hancock to answer the question “Why Denver?”.

“Denver feels like a natural home for Enablo as we expand our business to the US” said Daragh. “It feels like the most ‘Australian’ city in the US, with a great outdoor lifestyle, over 300 days of sunshine per year and a coffee, food, and beer scene to match Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne. It also has an amazing talent pool and is becoming one of the leading tech hubs in the US”.

The expansion to Denver couldn’t have taken place without the support of WeWork, the global co-working lessor for technology startups and services. With offices in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, and Atlanta, Enablo will soon call The Circa Building in Denver, home, with a new WeWork opening on December 2, 2019.

“WeWork is thrilled to count Enablo as a member and we look forward to welcoming their Denver team to The Circa Building when it opens in December. One of the great benefits of WeWork’s global network is that it allows companies like Enablo to scale quickly from one market to another, as the time needed to set-up operations is often dramatically reduced compared to if the company had found its own space. Our members are also able to work out of any other WeWork globally, and our community is fully focused on our members regardless of whether they’re a remote worker in Denver or in a company’s headquarters in Australia.” Said Tanya Nygaard, Community Director, WeWork.

If you’re an Australian startup looking to take the leap to Denver, now is the time!
